Nicola trained as a fine artist in the 1980s. She went on to work in shop and museum design and display and statue restoration, exploring many different media from plaster to clay to fibreglass, from cellulose-based paint to oil and acrylic. She kept her hand in as a painter, exhibiting in West Yorkshire venues while running art workshops for older people. When her novel, Amelia and the Virgin was published, she began teaching creative writing for the Open University, gaining a doctorate and working on many different projects including the BBC series Spies, Sleuths and  Detectives with Andrew Marr.

Her key love was always painting however, and over the last few years she has returned to it, creating a studio at her home in the Yorkshire dales where she is constantly inspired by the beautiful landscape around her, the local nightlife, and more intimate interiors and private gardens. She has  exhibited widely and her work has featured in international magazines such as Collect Art.
